Tiny Tips for Moms and Dads-Ingredient #2. What does it take and whom must you be to serve children as their teacher?

Children are the greatest gift to humanity.

You must have been “called” into the service of children to care, guide, nurture, protect, and provide opportunities for them that will allow them to discover themselves and their world.  This sets the stage for them to develop in the 4 Domains of their being: Cognitively, Physically, Social-Emotionally and Spiritually.

We never want to stifle the curiosity and innate thirst
children have to learn and discover their world.

You are going to see me refer to being “Called to serving children” a lot, because it is the foundation on which your mission as a teacher is founded and grounded.  We have to be clear as to what our responsibilities are in securing, imparting, and implementing not only a curriculum that is “Child Centered” and acknowledges that each child is unique and learns in their own way, but what we do goes far beyond just what is conceptualized as “teaching”.  We are creating the environment, teaching techniques and diverse modalities of learning, but we are doing something even more important in the development of a child.  We are teaching children about what it is to be human and validating who they are in their “divine identity”.  We are to guide them through their day-to-day learning experiences.  We are to nurture their social-emotional development. We are there as their protectors that take notice to how they are responding to and in the environment.  We are to secure an environment for them that is safe, loving, and gentle.

We are responsible for creating an environment that will captivate their imagination and love for learning.  We must make sure that the environment allows each child to feel as sense of ownership and empowerment in what they learn and how they learn.  This means that we have to be imaginative and creative.  This means that our education is never complete, and that we as teachers have a responsibility to continue to learn, not just academically, but in all areas of our life so that we can enrich the lives of the children we serve.  We have to have adventurous spirits.  We have to come into the class with enthusiasm and joy.  We have to make sure that we are on “watch” and get the full story behind the interactions of the children so that we are not quick to judge and label children.  We have to set up systems for communication and arbitration.  We have to work on their development of inner controls so that they have the tools necessary to engage successfully in not just the classroom, but in life.

Don’t ever think that a teacher’s job is stuffing academic curriculum down their throats and pray they can regurgitate the information to validate their learning.  No! No! No! We have the opportunity to engage with children in their “whole” development- All 4 Domains of their being: Cognitively, Physically, Social-Emotionally and Spiritually.  We cannot work with or for a child, until we learn first-hand who that child is and what that child needs in order to learn and be “Whole, healthy, and happy.  What a privilege it is to be one of those “Called Servants in the Service of Children”.  If you are called, it will be a life of fulfillment that cannot be expressed in words.  It will be going to the mall and all of a sudden, a young person or a child comes up to you and hugs you and says, “Thank you so much for being my teacher”.  It will be a parent seeing you at the grocery store and when they recognize you, they feel compelled to tell you, “Thank you so much for making a difference in the life of my child”!  40+ years later and I am still having the experience of my students remembering my contribution to their life.  My cup runneth over!  I am complete, but never finished working on their behalf.

Mama said,“Stop Complaining and Just Do Something Constructive”!  Day 41-ADC 24

This is the kind of leadership we need to support the families in this country!

The more her platform, policies, and accomplishments are exposed to our citizens, the more they will understand the value and urgency for Kamala and Tim to become their candidates of choice.  We need someone who will be a champion for children and families.  Living in this country at this time in history brings with it so many challenges and feelings of never being able to get ahead, that we struggle every day trying to keep our families intact and thriving.  We have problems with accessing health care, childcare, housing, groceries, transportation, affordable higher education and just keeping our sanity.

Life can seem like an endless maze to tackle and climb out of.  We need a President and Vice President that will take up the charge to enhance the lives of our families and their children.  In 2017 we had as many as 437,000 children in Foster Care.  In 2023 the number has reduced to 391,000.  In 20223 approximately 111,620 children were homeless.  In 2023 the statistics state that 12-14 million children in the U.S. face food insecurity, meaning they don’t when or where their next meal will come from.  Why are we in this state of affairs if those that claim to be so committed to a “Pro Life” agenda, are not whole heartedly invested in the children we have in our care right now.?

We owe it to our children and their families to do better by them.  These children that have graced us with their presence now are referred to as “Indigo children”- “Children with sight”.  This means that they come here highly evolved and unfortunately, we are not prepared for them and they in return are not able to be in tune with our vibration.  We should have been more highly evolved so that they would have been able to share their gifts with us.   We have an opportunity in this election to make choices that will move our country forward in the direction where we bring our young people to the table for conversation and sharing of ideas and challenges, they face.

We must listen in order to do!  We need a strong and vibrant campaign specifically to highlight and address what our new administration’s agenda will be for children and families.  The $6,000.00 for the first year of a child’s life is a great start, but so much more needs to be done to support our children and families, and who knows better than the families and children that need to be served.

Tiny Tips for Moms and Dads #96 The Ingredients of a “Called Teacher”.

Children are the greatest gift to humanity.

For the next couple of weeks, I will be running a series for parents and teachers on what I feel as a teacher and a Professor of Teacher Training, feels are the elements that need to be in the character development of a teacher that has been “Called” as their “Divine Purpose” to serve children.  Having been in the profession of education and as a Parenting Advocate, for over 40 years of my professional life, I feel that it is imperative that parents have a guide as to who should have the humongous responsibility of being their child’s teacher.

We, teachers, parents, and “The Community” are the ones who must advocate for our children.  It is an enormous commitment and responsibility.

The Question we must ask ourselves is- “What does it take and whom must you be, to serve children as their teacher?   It has been said-

“Many have come, but few have been chosen”!

Are you called to be in the service of children?

I will share each chapter of the book that will be published next year and I am inviting you to join me in discussion each of these ingredients that are required to be a “Called Teacher”.  Becoming a teacher is not a “JOB” it has to be your “WORK”!

What does it take and whom must you be, to serve children as their teacher?

You must have a love for children and a deep spiritual connection to who they are as gifts to humanity.

You must have been “Called” into the service of children to care, guide, nurture, protect, and provide opportunities for them that will allow them to discover themselves and their world.  This sets the stage for them to develop in the 4 Domains of their being: Cognitively, Physically, Social-Emotionally and Spiritually.

You are charged with teaching children to “love the art of learning”.

You must be intellectually prepared and committed to being a “lifelong learner”, because you understand that “there is always more truth and knowledge” to learn. You must understand that as you continue to learn and enhance your life, that it benefits not only you, but the lives of the children you are serving.

You must be joy filled.

You must be clear- this is living a happy, whole, physically and emotionally healthy life.

You must be patient.

You must be compassionate.

You must be a person of integrity.

You must be honest and forthright.

You must have a willingness to compromise.

You must utilize your creative genius.

You must be humble of Spirit and character.

You must be empathetic.

You must come from a place of “allowing” and not “controlling”.

You must be an advocate for the child and their family.

You must be a good listener- being open and receptive to other’s opinions and cultural values.

You must be just and fair in your decision-making processes.

You must be nonjudgmental otherwise you have closed the door to dialog and communication.

You must hold a space for children that it is always- “A new day”.

You must be able to live in the “Present” as children do so you too can live in the “Presence” and understand their reality of a world that is loving, beautiful, safe, accepting, nurturing, and is “theirs”.

Debes tener paciencia.

Debes ser compasivo.

Debes ser una persona íntegra.

Debes ser honesto y directo.

Debes estar dispuesto a hacer concesiones.

Debes utilizar tu genio creativo.

Tiny Tips for Mom’s and Dad’s# 78 Keep the Balance in a Child’s Life by Making Sure Two Very Important Components are a Priority in their Daily Routine-Play and Rest!

Celio lives for play and we know when he needs a nap or quiet cuddle time!

Children learn through play which is their means of answering the innate desire and need to be curious, discover the unknown, visit their world of imagination, quench their appetite for exploring and testing the limits, practicing a skill, critical thinking moments, and stretching their “will” to “do something all by themselves”!

This is one validation for parents who all too often have to advocate for their children that play is an essential element of their developmental strategies and feeds the 4 domains of what constitutes their divine human identity. 4 domains they will say to you? Yes, you are guiding, nurturing, and protecting the development and well-being of their mind, body, emotional, and spiritual growth! For children “play is their work, and work is play”! We as parents have the responsibility to provide the time, space, and elements that catch their curiosity and capture their imagination! We can engage and support their play, but we cannot take it over or try to manipulate what they have designed or created!

Play is sacred! Play is fostering what they are experiencing and understanding about the world they are living in. What we can support in their play is their love for playing and the acquisition of language to express their joy, feelings, and discovery. We don’t overtly correct their language we just model. It’s their own unique development timeline for every aspect of their development. I know this is contrary to what some educators might feel, but as an Early Childhood Specialist and Early Childhood teacher and professor, I have witnessed the magical moments when children come into their milestones their way and their time! I say magical because it is! Give them time! Give them space! Play with them! The time that you are invited or welcomed into their world of childhood goes by so quickly in the linear world!

Then there is the rest element! I don’t care what people say, children even teenagers need rest! They cannot run on all their little cylinders full time, 24/7! Everyone, much less children need “time in”! Time in? Yes, that time when they can shut the world out and go within! Sleep, quiet time, cuddle time and time to just “be”! Be off! Be relaxed! Be relieved from other people’s expectations of what they should be doing or being! They need rest to fuel those 4 domains of their essential authentic divine “selves”! As a preschool – Kindergarten teacher I never forced my children to sleep but I did give each child their own personal cot, with their own personal blanket from home, with their own special book or cuddle toy. I always played soft classical music, dimmed the lights, cooled down the room, and spent a little time sitting on the floor next to each child so that they had a special “attention” time with me. I would ask them about their day or if they had something special, they wanted to share with me. By the time nap time was over, everyone had usually fallen asleep! That space and that time energized them for their afternoon schedule! Children’s behavior is colored by the amount of rest their body needs and even though each child is unique, they all need rest!

Truth be told, we are more present and accessible to our children when we have taken time for self-care and have rested! Overload is a guarantee for mass confusion and upset!

Sunday Morning Prayers #50 Our Behavior as Adults is Putting the Lives of Our Children at Risk.

We have so much to lose if we don’t take seriously what our world of violence and dysfunctional behavior is costing our children!

Dear Great Spirit,

It took me a little time to write this prayer to you because the events of this past weekend highlighted for me just how violent and void of consciousness and moral fiber our society has degenerated to.  We take none of our individual and collective actions seriously enough to “Call each other out or to check our own behavior”.  We have become reactionary bold belligerent with each other whether we know them personally or not.  No one is exempt from receiving the rath and attack from someone who obviously is living in their “pain body”. We need your spirit of peace.  We need your spirit of compassion.  We need your spirit of compromise and understanding.  We need your spirit of mercy and forgiveness.  We need your spirit of discernment and a willingness to refrain from judgment. We need to learn patience and a willingness to trust that you “Great Spirit” will intercede in the madness that has engulfed our world, because you care!  We have to find a more humane, gentle, and loving way to relate to each other.  We have to think about how our actions, words, and attitudes impact other people.

Words hurt! We have to hold ourselves to a higher level if we are going to change the direction this world is going in.  Great Spirit we need for you to soften our hearts, open our minds, and direct our behavior so that we are our divine identities in our life, in our work, in our relationships, and when we are challenged by the trials and tribulations of life.  Great Spirit hear our prayers and feel the urgency in our souls for peace, joy, love, and a world that is balanced so that our children live their best life.

32 states that have sanctioned teachers bringing guns to school.

It just amazes me to be in this place at this time in my life where now as a professor that has taught “teachers” to be “teachers”, that our country is allowing teachers to bring guns in the classroom.  What is their thinking?  32 states out of our 50 states have children in a classroom where teachers have the responsibility of safeguarding a lethal weapon on top of the responsibility to safeguard the lives of our children.  I can’t imagine taking my child to school and leaving her in the care of a civilian who has a gun.  I might add to my concern that teachers are not law enforcement officers and have not had the training to discern what is an appropriate response in a volatile situation.

As it is, our local police officers need a longer more expansive time and firsthand experiences in their training.  Another thing that concerns me is that teachers-most teachers- get their bachelor’s degree and then do 1 additional year to acquire their teaching credential.  The criteria for becoming a teacher are exams and practice teaching experience.  There is a background check to see if the potential teacher has a criminal record, but there are no psychological test and evaluation that establishes the mental and emotional health of prospective teachers.  This to me this should be a serious consideration before putting a gun in someone’s hands. I can tell you from first-hand experience that there were times I had to gently encourage some students to consider another profession.

Even with teachers coming into the field that seem to have a sound emotional and mental healthy persona, life happens, circumstances of traumatic events happen, and people have break downs.

I have witnessed these kinds of events where teachers lose control and have emotional breakdowns in the classroom.  Our teachers in our public schools are under extreme stress just trying to deal with the everyday things they have to overcome and solve to maintain a functioning classroom environment where children can learn.

We need for our classrooms to be safe, and we are intelligent enough to know how to secure the schools.  Yes, 30 years ago, my brother-in-law, as a principal of a high school, requested that their school board consider installing metal detectors and to check backpacks as a daily procedure.  He made suggestions on procedures and protocols for securing our school facilities. He has even written a book that should be taken seriously if we want to secure our schools.  The whole American cultural is being driven by violence and weapons.  Some are physical weapons and now there are virtual internet communicational weapons as well.  We have to do better!  We have to get a handle on “Gun Control”!  We have to take the safety of our children seriously and demand that our government be called into action against gun lobbyist and gun manufactures.  We need to make sure that guns cannot be sold or made via the internet.

Right now, with 32 states doing their own thing and there is no consistent, intelligent, attainable, law in place to protect our children, we have to advocate for them.  We have more power than we use, and we have more power than we can imagine.  Contact your representatives and advocate for your children.  Contact your local city councils and educational district boards and voice your concerns and demands.  This is our “Call to Action”!  We are all our children have!

Tiny Tips for Moms and Dads #73 Parenting Through the Chaos-It’s a Challenge We all Have to Deal with at Some Time!

It’s the tender moments that get us through the
challenging times in parenting.

Take a deep breath, pause, assess, and then respond to the situation or challenge.  It is difficult to be “on” and sometime respond the way we would like to when we are overwhelmed and caught off guard.  It is a moment-by-moment decision making challenge when you are a parent.  You are never going to be fully prepared for some of the things that can pop up when you least expect it.  Not only do you have to handle a situation, at the same time you have to be present, calm, and collected, so that your child-children feel safe and secure.  They will need us to be in our position of authority and competence to handle any chaotic or upsetting situation or event that might come into play.  This of course can be a real balancing act and call us out to be the grounding cord for our children.  It comes with the “Job”, this responsibility to be a confident and capable parent.  Sometimes I feel like I have a cloak on, and I am a superhero saving my child from the chaos and confusion of this upside down, inside out crazy world.

I cannot imagine how parents living in war torn countries deal with violence, death, hunger, and loss of their homes as well as any normalcy in their life experiences.  How do you comfort children under those circumstances?  How do you plan for their future when you don’t know if they will live the next day?  We as parents love our children so deeply and compassionately, that anything or anyone that causes them to be anxious or frightened stirs something inside of us that cannot be explained!  It is a call to action!  It puts us in an out of body status of being. We rise up to meet any challenge at a moment’s notice. Sometimes an intuitive feeling that comes over us that tells us “Our children need us”!  There is a very unique spiritual connection between parents and their children that when tapped into is a vibrational communication medium.  It actually works both ways I might add.

Children are very sensitive to what is going on with their parents even if they cannot articulate what it is they know when there is something troubling them.  I love this “Love Connection”!  I use it even now that my daughter is a grown woman.  We can be in the same room or miles-sometimes as much as hundreds of miles apart, and we communicate through this “vibrational love communication medium”!  Parents have to make sure that they take care of themselves as a routine so that they are able to take care of their most precious gift-“their children”!  I hold prayer for all the parents throughout the world that are navigating parenting in today’s society.  Hold on!  Take care! Deep breaths!  Meditation in your sacred space.  Go slowly when you can and be methodical and intentional about your response to situations and challenges.  It is not the situation that marks our ability to handle things, but how we respond to the challenges of life.

Sunday Morning Prayers #44 Our Children Do not Belong to Just Us!  Our Children are the Divine Design of Great Spirit and We Have Been Given Them as a Gift!

Children are the most miraculous and precious gift given to humanity.

Great Spirit,

This prayer is coming directly from my soul.  I know you know how important children are to me the very thought of how some of the children in our world are desperately trying to endure hunger, war, loss of family, loss of home, and lack of medical attention, griefs my soul.  Thinking about the children in our country, although they are not on the same kind of battle ground, they are still fighting to survive the chaos and confusion of our dysfunctional society. They need so much than what we are offering our children on a global level.  Children deserve so much more from us.  Children should not be caught up in the experience of adults battling their egos for power, greed, and superiority!  We have not done what we know you expect of us! We know that we are not holding ourselves accountable and that we have not prioritized our children and have not acknowledged that “children are a divine gift”!

Lay on our hearts “Great Spirit” the consciousness to go forth into the world and be the change agents that our children need us to be.  Empower us! Ignite us!  Guide us!  Protect us!  Open the flood gates to impact the world and heal the pain that children are engulfed in.  Lighten their burdens!  Lighten their hearts!  Fill their souls with faith and hope.  Give them the vision that they will be delivered from a chaotic upside-down world and that they will be delivered into the world that you created for them “in the beginning”.  Let them feel your love!  Let them see their future in the divine design that will be manifested.  Stay close to them “Great Spirit” because they need to relate to you “spirit” to “Spirit”!  Lead us “Great Spirit” on this pilgrimage to save our children!

I’m Just Sayin- Notes from Beth #71 Ingratitude Leads to a Negative Attitude Which In Turn Results in a Loss of an Evolved Higher Vibrational Altitude-Look Out! Don’t Fall for the Trap!

There is no substitution for our family relationships. There will be the challenging storms of life that surges in the winds and the waves, but ultimately, when they say “blood is thicker than water”, there is truth to this cliché, and the foundation is “unconditional love” steeped in “gratitude” and appreciation for each other clothed in mutual respect.

I have in my life experienced and witnessed the interactions and engagements of family members from all walks of life.  I have written an Early Childhood thesis for my master’s degree on children.  I have published a book on parenting. I have written lectures for teachers in training.  I am an advocate for children and families which is why family relations are so near and dear to my heart.  I love my family so much and we as a family realize that it takes a lot of work, patience, compromising, cooperation, unconditional love, grace, forgiveness, acceptance of who people are in their life expression, and an understanding that no matter how complicated any of our relationships can get, ultimately we are “FAMILY” and we have a bond that ties us to each other in an eternal dimension that nothing and no one can permeate and destroy.  There has to be honesty and accountability for the wellbeing of our family relationships.  There has to be open communication so that family members are not second guessing what someone in the family is thinking and feeling. Although we have a spiritual connection that operates on a vibrational wavelength, we still have to speak our truth and feelings honestly and openly.  The family in return has to be active and attentive listeners.  We cannot listen with already knowing perceptions and judgment of what is being felt or the experience that the family member is absorbed in.

We as family have to show appreciation and gratitude for the expressions of love and the support we give each other.  Yes, it is a given, that the very nature and design of a family unit involves being there for each other.  We were ordained when we signed up to be part of a particular family to commit fully to the tenants of familyhood.  It does not require us to lose ourselves, but by fully engaging in our family structures, we grow spiritually into who we were designed to be.  I know this is a difficult concept in many cultures, but it is not foreign in our indigenous family structures.  I dare say it is common for grandparents to be intricately involved in the raising of the children and supporting the integrity of the family.  There is a great appreciation for the wisdom and contributions of the elders.  The older the elder the more gratitude, respect and honoring is expected.  Parents are shown appreciation for not just the act of bringing a child into the world, but for all the guidance and nurturing they do in raising their children.  Parenting is a lifetime commitment and is not just tied to this physical realm.

This is a big challenge for children coming from indigenous cultures because it is a drastic contradiction of what the mainline culture holds as valuable or correct.  They believe in the “individual” exclusive of the “us or we” texture of the family structure of indigenous cultural values and construct.  This ability of “our children of color” to survive within the context, practices, and values of their birth family, is difficult and can create a “break in belonging”!

When they step into the world as we want them to, but then fall into the trap of becoming “of the world”, they lose sight of their authentic selves and compromise the values and relationships of their “core” being which is connected to “their family”.  This does not mean that as young adults creating their own family life outside of the “core”, that they are limited to their original family values, but there are some basic values that we pray they hold on to- “Honor they mother and father all the days of their life”!  In our family structure we believe in accepting, including, and opening a space to include our children’s spouse and children into the fold.  There is always more “love” to share!  The family village expands and is enriched by the blessings of inclusion.  Now I know there are families where it might be felt that a parent is not deserving of the child’s respect, but it would have to be a huge traumatic experience that would warrant estranging themselves from the “Core”

I remember when my sister worked of Dept. of Social Services and at times would have to remove a child from their home.  It would amaze her that even under the worse circumstances, most children did not want to be separated from their parents.  So, for those of us that have been blessed to be born and raised in a loving-no family is perfect- family with loving and devoted parents, to express ingratitude, disrespect, and dishonoring, is one of the most painful experiences a parent can have!  It is like living in a “perpetual death void”!

I pray for those families that have and are currently experiencing this and can only say- “Hold fast to your faith” that “this too shall pass” and that ultimately “Great Spirit” is in control and there is always a reason and a season for the challenge.  One piece of advice to you if this speaks to you-

  1. Hold a sacred space for them to return to the fold -family.
  2. Relinquish the need for judgment and consequences for the lost child’s “out of body and out of spirit” condition.
  3. Release and let go of any anger or pain because neither of these conditions leave space for healing.  Anger and pain are self-destructive, and you don’t want to hold pain.
  4. Remember that through this experience you are loved and are love and that is what sustains your joy and peace.
  5. Hold on to the people in your family that show you the love and respect you deserve because it is important for you to live in the “present” so that you are one with the “Presence” for this is where the healing begins and ends!

I pray this Note resonates with those of you that were in need of support and ushers in a sense of “Peace”!

A smile and a hug is worth a million words!

Tiny Tips for Moms and Dads #7 Siblings- The Bond of an Eternal Relationship that Must Wither All of Life’s Storms and Protect the Collective Memories of Joy!

As siblings we were ordained to take care of one another.
It is an eternal relationship blessed by the angels.

I really cannot begin to share with you how important the bonding development is between siblings because it is so near and dear to my heart!  I am so appreciative to my parents for the way in which they raise the five of us to have a loving and caring relationship with each other.  They taught us how vital it was to always stand up for each other when any of us are challenged with a situation or circumstances that might cause us to need the kind of support that can only come from “family”.  I know that no matter what I encounter in life, I can count on my brothers and sisters to come to my aid.  Emotionally and spiritually, I cannot tell you how powerful and grounded it has made my life.  As children we were taught that the bond between us was special and unique and that we were invincible when we came together to solve a problem or come to each other’s aid.

We were the Galloway Clan, and we took care of each other as children and still do to this day as adults.  It is important for us as parents to instill this bond of love, respect, and allegiance among the siblings in their family unit.  It teaches children the value and importance of being a loving human being.  It teaches children the value of loving and being loved as a foundation of what to expect for in a loving relationship when they embark on dating as well as what to expect in the quality of friendships they form.  Yes, it is not the same kind of love, and we know there are many types of love, but this love that abides in our family unit sets the foundation for becoming a loving human being.

In our society today, we are engulfed in developing our species to be independent and self-sufficient and this is important!  At the same time our human design calls for us to also be interdependent with one another.  This interdependence is not an either-or choice, it is an element of our character development that should be in alignment, harmony, and balance.  We want our children to become strong, independent thinkers and doers, but at the same time we want the family unit to be built on the trust and “knowingness”, that we are intertwined in a good way with one another’s life.  Not all children have siblings, but when there is a psychological and emotional need to have that kind of relationship, they find a way to develop that relationship with perhaps a cousin or friend that is willing and open to being a suricate sibling.  A wonderful example is how my Niki decided that as an only child, her cousins-Robin-Joshua- and Leilani, were in fact her siblings.  Lucky for Niki, they love her so much they fully embraced the relationship.

There are of course children that feel perfectly fine with being the only child and they are healthy emotionally and spiritually without a sibling.  This conversation though is to bring to light that as families with children, you might think about what you want the relationship between your children to look like and feel like.  On a spiritual plane the relationship between siblings was meant to be eternal, unconditional, based on love, compassion, respect, and an intuitive language of “knowingness”.  Perhaps at another time I will share some of the things our parents did that nurtured our relationship as siblings!

Just food for thought!
