The pain of losing a child is unspeakable.
I did not know this young man, but I know that every mother’s fear especially mothers of color carry a nerve that stays on edge as they pray their child is safe. As a Black mother, I have firsthand, experience of praying that my child will not encounter a situation that would hurt or harm her. This experience of what Tyre endured in the hands of law enforcement, reminds us that evil is evil and that the color of your skin does not give you immunity to losing your soul and engaging in criminal behavior. These people were not committed to their oath to protect and serve. This was a “criminal gang”! This was reminiscent of the behavior of men on the plantations that were used to monitor and control other slaves at the master’s command. There is no way in this day and age that we can allow anyone to use their position in law enforcement to carry out this criminal, inhumane, evil, behavior. Our ancestors went through too much pain and degradation for us to not speak out on this appalling and unforgiveable inhumane behavior.
There are many layers to this situation, and all of the layers have to be peeled back and dealt with. I feel like we have abandoned our responsibility to carry the ancestor’s message of their sacrifices and strength of character that it took to not just survive the American culture, but to impact the culture. We have a responsibility to continue to stand up-speak up and show up and demand that we live with respect and dignity. We have a responsibility to instill a connection with our brothers and sisters in our race so that when we look at each other we see ourselves in each other. The self-hatred has got to be acknowledge and worked through so that we can hold each other accountable. This world is so warped in hatred and greed, that we are truthfully engaged in spiritual warfare. We have to see the conditions of this country slipping before our very eyes into darkness and chaos. We will lose some of the battles that lay ahead of us, but we will not lose this world and this planet. Civilizations come and go, but somehow, we rise from the ashes and the floods, because ultimately, God is in charge. This is His world, and we are His children. Forgive me if I seem like I am rambling, but I am having a hard time grasping all the violence that seems to be consuming us right now. I am lost as to what to do and what to say. I think at this point the best thing for me to do is to pray and meditate. I think I have to go within and listen for that still quiet voice that guides my thoughts and actions.
Footnote:
My sister Patty had a dream last night where my sister Lark, who has transitioned, came to her and said clearly to her- “I think the people in this world just hate each other”! Is this the view of us from heaven?
