I can’t deny that have negative feelings about Ex-President Trumps behavior and character that he has demonstrated in his private, public, and political life, but for a man of “The Cloth” to say to these kinds of statements publicly to the people of the Catholic Church is disturbing and, in my mind, and heart disappointing. My father and my husband were both ministers and in fact my Dad was a civil rights activist, and I never heard him ever express himself like this. It might have been wiser for the Pope to refrain from engaging in the political arena of the United States of America. We are desperately looking for ways to reframe the current tension and rhetoric that incites hatred and violence, and we need our religious institutions to be a beacon light in this political and spiritual warfare that has consumed our country and election process.

Knowing the upbringing and cultural values of VP Kamala Harris, even if she ignores his comment, it is hurtful to be called “evil”. It is painful and disrespectful. My prayer is that he will find a way to apologize for his words that could have a negative perception of who she is and what she stands for. A person’s character is a bond of their identity. Mama always said two things that have stayed with me all my life and guided my words and actions. First, “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. The second is “words hurt and once said they can never be taken back, so think before you speak”. I think this is sound advice to live by. I have thought about whether or not to address this experience on my blogging platform, but if I am encouraging others to stand in their “Truth” and to “hold on to their principles, values, and ethics, then I must express what I am feeling. My grandmother was Catholic, and I educated my child in the Catholic school system from elementary school through college. I have a deep and abiding respect for what the institution can do in this world. I pray the Pope will rephrase his comment!
